About Audemars Piguet
The Royal Oak changed watchmaking forever.
Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet founded their manufacture in the remote Vallée de Joux village of Le Brassus in 1875. Entirely family-owned to this day, AP has never needed to answer to shareholders — and that independence shows in every piece they produce. In 1972, Gérald Genta designed the Royal Oak in a single night: an octagonal bezel with exposed screws, integrated bracelet, and sapphire-blue Grande Tapisserie dial that shocked the watch world and invented the luxury sports watch genre. The Royal Oak Offshore amplified that iconography further. The Code 11.59 introduced a more contemporary round case while still housing entirely in-house movements. Today, Audemars Piguet produces fewer than 50,000 pieces per year across all references — making every pre-owned example a scarce and compelling acquisition.

Buying Guide
How to Buy a Pre-Owned Audemars Piguet
01
Decide between Royal Oak families before any reference
The Royal Oak (15500/15202), Royal Oak Offshore (26400/26405), and Royal Oak Concept watches share a name and bezel inspiration but are radically different watches. The classic Royal Oak is the elegant 39–41mm option; the Offshore is the bold 42–44mm sports chronograph; the Concept is AP's experimental laboratory. Each appeals to a different collector profile.
02
AP's 'extract' for older references
Audemars Piguet maintains production records reaching back to 1875. For pre-2010 Royal Oak references, request a Letter of Authenticity from the manufacture. The letter confirms original sale destination, dial/case configuration, and any known service history. Allow 4–8 weeks; the cost is modest relative to the value of the watch.
03
The Grande Tapisserie dial reveals a lot
On a genuine Royal Oak, the Grande Tapisserie pattern is hand-stamped using vintage rose-engine machines unique to AP. Under a 10x loupe, every square should show identical depth and crisp pyramidal apex points. Counterfeit dials show shallow, uneven stamping or blurred apex points. The pattern alignment between the bezel-screw positions is also extremely consistent on genuine pieces.
04
Bracelet wear is harder to fix than case wear
The Royal Oak's integrated bracelet is one of the most labour-intensive components in luxury watchmaking. Heavy bracelet wear or stretched links cannot be polished out — the only fix is bracelet replacement, which is expensive and slow at AP. When evaluating a pre-owned Royal Oak, examine bracelet stretch by holding the clasp open and checking for visible play between links.
05
Limited editions: do your homework
AP produces dozens of limited editions per year, many in tiny quantities. Some appreciate dramatically (Black Panther Concept, John Mayer 'Cosmos'); others trade near retail. Before paying a premium, verify production numbers (often 50–250 pieces), check secondary market history, and ensure the watch is fully documented including the limited-edition warranty card and presentation box.
Authentication
How we authenticate every Audemars Piguet
Each piece is inspected by our in-house watchmakers across the points below before it is offered for sale.
Octagonal bezel & screws
The eight white-gold hex screws on the Royal Oak bezel are individually polished with a tool-mark direction unique to AP. On genuine pieces, the screws are aligned in pairs facing inward. Misaligned screws are an immediate red flag — re-aligned via service typically rotates them slightly, but inversed alignment indicates a counterfeit or unauthorized parts replacement.
Movement decoration
AP's Calibre 4302 (current 15500ST) and Calibre 2121 (15202 Jumbo) feature hand-bevelled bridges, polished sinks, perlage on the mainplate, and a heavy 22ct gold or platinum rotor. The decoration is extremely consistent and hand-finished. The rotor weight should feel substantial when the watch is rotated — counterfeit movements often have lighter pot-metal rotors.
Case-back engraving
Pre-2019 Royal Oaks have solid case-backs engraved with model details. From 2019, most Royal Oaks have sapphire display backs. The engraving on solid backs is laser-cut to a specific depth and font; check serial alignment with the case papers. The display back is double-AR coated and free of internal dust on genuine pieces.
Bracelet finish & link transitions
The Royal Oak bracelet alternates brushed centre links with polished outer links. The transitions are razor-sharp on genuine pieces — you can feel the angle change with a fingernail. The bracelet end-link to case fit should be perfectly flush, with no gap visible between the lug and the bracelet under normal lighting.
Dial colour stability
AP's blue Grande Tapisserie dial uses a galvanic deposition process that is highly stable over decades. Dials that show colour fading, oxidation spots, or unusual tonal shifts are either heavily UV-exposed or counterfeit. Genuine dial colour ages slowly and uniformly.
Market Outlook
The Audemars Piguet secondary market in 2026
Audemars Piguet has consolidated as one of the three pillars of the modern luxury sports watch market alongside Patek Philippe and Rolex. Steel Royal Oak references peaked in 2022 around 2–3x retail and have corrected to roughly 1.3–1.8x retail today — still well above MSRP and historically supportive of value. The 15202 Jumbo (discontinued in 2022) has held value better than any other Royal Oak. The 15500ST in steel is currently the most liquid current-generation reference. Royal Oak Offshore and Royal Oak Concept pieces vary widely in market behaviour: titanium and ceramic Offshores have appreciated; standard steel Offshores have softened. Limited editions (Black Panther, Marvel collaborations, John Mayer) remain extremely strong. AP's deliberate decision to keep total annual production under 50,000 units across all references provides a structural floor under prices.

Audemars Piguet — Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to buy a pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?
Yes, when purchased from a specialist dealer. At Prosperity Time, every pre-owned AP undergoes rigorous authentication: we verify the movement serial, examine the octagonal bezel and Grande Tapisserie dial under magnification, and confirm case hallmarks. What makes the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak so valuable?
The Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta in 1972, is credited with creating the luxury sports watch category. Its integrated bracelet, eight-sided bezel, and Grande Tapisserie dial were revolutionary at launch and remain design icons. Limited production from an independent, family-owned manufacture keeps supply tight.
Which AP references hold value best?
The Royal Oak 15202 'Jumbo' (39mm ultra-thin), Royal Oak 15500 (41mm, Calibre 4302), and Royal Oak Offshore in titanium or ceramic consistently command the strongest resale values. Skeletonized and precious metal limited editions are particularly sought-after.

What is the difference between AP Calibre 2121 and Calibre 4302?
The Calibre 2121 is the ultra-thin self-winding movement that powered the original 1972 Royal Oak Jumbo and the modern 15202. It is just 3.05mm thick — among the thinnest automatic movements ever produced. The Calibre 4302 is AP's current-generation in-house movement (4.13mm) with 70-hour power reserve, used in the 41mm 15500ST. The 4302 is more technically advanced; the 2121 is more historically significant.
How does AP service compare to Patek and Rolex?
AP service is generally regarded as among the best in the industry, with full overhauls performed at the manufacture in Le Brassus or at certified service centres in major cities. Service for a standard Royal Oak typically costs $1,200–$2,500 and takes 4–8 months. Complications service can be $5,000+ and take 12 months. Always service AP through authorised channels — the bracelet refinishing alone requires specialist tooling.
Are there fakes of the Royal Oak in the market?
The Royal Oak is among the most counterfeited watches in the world. Modern 'super-fakes' can be very close to genuine in casual examination but always reveal themselves under specialist scrutiny: weight, bracelet finish, movement decoration, and dial pattern depth. Always buy from authenticated dealers and never from unverified private sellers without independent authentication.
What does the future hold for Royal Oak waitlists?
Royal Oak waitlists at AP boutiques remain effectively closed for new clients on most steel references. AP has explicitly stated they will not increase production beyond current levels, prioritising quality and exclusivity. The pre-owned market will remain the primary route to ownership for the foreseeable future.
