The jeweler of kings. The king of jewelers.

About Cartier

Where haute joaillerie meets horological mastery.

Since Louis-François Cartier founded his Parisian atelier in 1847, the house has dressed royalty, revolutionized jewelry design, and invented some of the most iconic watch cases in history. The Santos — created in 1904 for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont — was the world's first purpose-built wristwatch for men. The Tank, introduced in 1917 and inspired by the Renault FT-17, remains one of the most copied and beloved silhouettes in watchmaking. The Ballon Bleu arrived in 2007 and became an instant modern classic with its floating crown guard. The Panthère, favored by a generation of tastemakers, is having a major renaissance. Cartier does not merely make watches — it creates objects of desire that transcend category. In the pre-owned market, Cartier pieces offer extraordinary style at compelling prices relative to more technically focused competitors.

Buying Guide

How to Buy a Pre-Owned Cartier

01

Decide between watch and jewellery-watch

Cartier produces watches in two distinct philosophies: serious watches (Santos automatic, Tank Must automatic, Drive de Cartier) and jewellery-watches where the design language is paramount (Panthère, Ballon Bleu in smaller sizes, Tank Must quartz). Both are legitimate, but service intervals, movement quality, and resale dynamics differ substantially. Decide which philosophy matters to you before choosing a reference.

02

Quartz versus automatic on Cartier — both are valid

Many Cartier references (Tank Must, Santos-Dumont, Panthère) use high-grade Cartier quartz movements rather than mechanical movements. Quartz Cartier is not 'cheap' — it is a deliberate design choice that allows ultra-thin profiles and reliable accuracy. However, mechanical Cartier (Santos automatic WSSA0018, Tank Must WSTA0041, Calibre de Cartier) commands stronger pre-owned premiums and is preferred by most collectors.

03

Vintage Tank deserves special diligence

Vintage Cartier Tank, particularly the 1960s–80s Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Cintrée, is one of the most exciting vintage collecting categories. But the market is full of franken-watches: original cases with replacement dials, swapped movements, or refinished gold. Always require photos of the case-back stamps, movement, and dial under raking light. We can verify authenticity through Cartier's archive on request.

04

Box and papers matter less than for sports watches

For dress-watch Cartier (Tank, Ballon Bleu, Panthère), box and papers are nice but command a smaller premium than for sports watches. For Santos and Calibre — which compete more directly with Rolex and Tudor — full set is more valuable. The most important documentation is the Cartier Certificate of Authenticity, which the manufacture issues on request for any genuine Cartier.

05

Strap & bracelet versatility is part of the value

Modern Santos uses the QuickSwitch interchangeable strap system; Tank, Ballon Bleu, and other models accept a wide range of straps. When buying pre-owned, confirm the watch comes with at least the original strap/bracelet — replacement Cartier straps are surprisingly expensive. The QuickSwitch system on Santos doubles the wearable utility of the watch.

Authentication

How we authenticate every Cartier

Each piece is inspected by our in-house watchmakers across the points below before it is offered for sale.

Cabochon crown

Most Cartier watches feature a sapphire or spinel cabochon set into the crown. On genuine pieces, the cabochon is set with extreme precision and the metal bezel around it is polished to a perfect rim. Counterfeits show glue residue, off-centre stones, or rough metal finish around the cabochon.

Secret signature on dial

From the 1990s onward, most Cartier watches have a secret signature 'Cartier' printed in microscopic letters within one of the Roman numerals (typically the X or VII). Visible only under 10x magnification. Its presence and quality of printing is a strong authentication marker on modern references.

Case-back engraving

Cartier case-backs are laser-engraved with the model name, reference number, and unique serial. The engraving depth and font are very consistent on genuine pieces. The serial number should match the warranty card and the Cartier database (which our team can verify on request).

Movement signing

Cartier's mechanical movements (Calibre 1847 MC, Calibre 1904 MC) are decorated with Côtes de Genève and signed 'Cartier' on the rotor and main bridge. Quartz movements are signed Cartier on the bridge and module. Counterfeit movements typically use cheap ETA-style movements with no Cartier signing.

Bracelet & link finish

Cartier's link bracelets — particularly on the Santos, Panthère, and Tank Française — feature precision-machined links with polished and brushed finishes. Counterfeit bracelets often have visible casting marks on the underside of links and rough edges where the genuine should be sharp.

Market Outlook

The Cartier secondary market in 2026

Cartier has been the standout performer in the broader luxury watch market over the past three years. While Rolex and Patek corrected from 2022 peaks, Cartier values broadly held or modestly appreciated, driven by surging fashion and cultural relevance. The Santos large WSSA0018 in steel has been particularly strong, frequently trading at or above retail in the secondary market. The Tank Must in steel with automatic movement has become the breakout reference of the 2020s, with secondary market prices climbing 20–35% since 2022. Vintage Tank references — particularly the Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Cintrée from the 1970s–80s — continue to set new auction records. The Panthère's renaissance has driven steel reference values up significantly. Cartier offers what may currently be the best value in serious horology relative to brand prestige and design heritage.

Is a quartz Cartier worth buying pre-owned?

Yes. Cartier's quartz movements are produced to high standards and offer the advantage of ultra-thin cases and reliable accuracy. The Tank Must quartz (WSTA0040), Panthère quartz, and Santos-Dumont quartz are excellent choices for buyers who prioritise wearability and dial design over mechanical complexity. Resale values are generally lower than equivalent automatic versions, but acquisition cost is also significantly lower.

How does Cartier handle service for vintage pieces?

Cartier maintains service capability for most pieces produced in the past 50 years. Vintage Tank, Santos, and other reference services should be performed at Cartier's New York or Paris service centres or by independent specialists with verified Cartier parts access. Expect service on a vintage Tank to cost $600–$1,200 and take 3–6 months. Always confirm parts availability before committing to service.

What is the difference between Santos and Santos-Dumont?

The Santos de Cartier (current refs WSSA0018 etc.) is the modern automatic sports-luxury watch with QuickSwitch bracelet. The Santos-Dumont is the manual-winding dress-watch version named directly after the aviator — thinner, more formal, and produced in smaller quantities. The Santos-Dumont represents the historical purist's choice; the Santos is the contemporary versatile choice.

Why is the Cartier Tank so culturally significant?

The Tank has been worn by virtually every cultural icon of the 20th century: Andy Warhol, Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Yves Saint Laurent, Truman Capote, Michelle Obama. It transcends watch collecting into the broader vocabulary of design, art, and style. The Tank's longevity (over 100 years in continuous production) and democratic price point compared to other prestige watches has made it the closest thing to a universal status object in horology.
