About Patek Philippe
The apex of Geneva's watchmaking tradition.
Founded in Geneva in 1839, Patek Philippe has produced timepieces of extraordinary complexity and beauty for nearly two centuries without interruption. Entirely independent and family-owned, the manufacture crafts every component — from mainspring to dial — under a single Geneva roof. The Nautilus, designed by Gérald Genta in 1976, redefined the luxury sports watch with its porthole-inspired octagonal case and integrated bracelet. The Aquanaut offers a sportier alternative with its rounded case and tropical composite strap. The Calatrava embodies dress-watch perfection in its purest form. Grand Complications — perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, and split-seconds chronographs — represent decades of accumulated knowledge. In the pre-owned market, Patek Philippe consistently commands the highest prices of any watch brand, and key references regularly appreciate over time.

Buying Guide
How to Buy a Pre-Owned Patek Philippe
01
Establish your collecting axis first
A Nautilus is a fundamentally different acquisition from a Calatrava, even though both wear the Patek shield. Decide whether you want a sports-luxury piece (Nautilus, Aquanaut), a dress watch (Calatrava), or a complication (annual calendar, perpetual, world time). Each axis has very different secondary market dynamics, prices, and authentication concerns.
02
Patek's Extract from the Archives is essential for vintage
Patek Philippe maintains a continuous production archive going back to 1839. Any vintage Patek (pre-2000) should be accompanied by an Extract from the Archives — an official certificate confirming production date, original sale destination, and dial/case configuration. The Extract costs CHF 250 from the manufacture and dramatically de-risks the acquisition. We can request it on your behalf as part of the purchase.
03
Discontinued Nautilus references are a one-way market
The 5711/1A-010 was discontinued in 2021 and the 5711/1A-014 'Tiffany Blue' was a single-year production. Steel Nautilus supply is now permanently fixed at the number of pieces produced before discontinuation. If you want a steel 5711, you will only ever buy one in the pre-owned market — and that supply continues to shrink as collectors store pieces in long-term collections.
04
Service history is critical on complicated pieces
Patek perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, and split-seconds chronographs need specialist service every 5–8 years. A complete service on a Patek complication costs $5,000–$15,000+ at the manufacture and can take 12 months. Always ask for service history and budget for an upcoming service when the watch is more than 4 years from its last documented overhaul.
05
Original strap and buckle quietly preserve value
A Nautilus on its original integrated bracelet, an Aquanaut on its original Tropic strap, or a Calatrava on its original alligator strap with Patek-stamped buckle preserves resale value much better than aftermarket replacements. Replacement parts from Patek are expensive and slow to source — buy with the original components in place.
Authentication
How we authenticate every Patek Philippe
Each piece is inspected by our in-house watchmakers across the points below before it is offered for sale.
Hallmarks & engravings
Every Patek case is engraved with the case maker's poinçon, the metal hallmark (e.g., 750 for 18ct gold, 950 for platinum), and the case serial. The Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève) appears on movements and is visible through display casebacks on most modern references. The engraving depth, font, and alignment are extremely difficult to replicate.
Movement decoration
Patek movements are finished to the most demanding standard in series production: hand-bevelled (anglage) bridge edges, internal angles cut at 90 degrees (a hallmark of true hand-finishing), perlage on the mainplate, and Côtes de Genève on the bridges. Counterfeit movements lack the depth and crispness of these decorations.
Dial printing & guilloché
Nautilus and Aquanaut dials feature horizontal embossed patterns with extreme precision and depth. Calatrava and Complications dials use guilloché engine-turning that should show consistent tooling marks under magnification. Printing on the dial — particularly the 'Patek Philippe Geneve' signature and Calatrava cross — should be perfectly aligned and razor-sharp at every edge.
Case finishing
Patek alternates brushed and polished surfaces with mathematical precision. The transitions between finishes should be sharp at every angle. On the Nautilus, the bezel-to-case transition is a chamfered black-polished bevel that is among the most difficult finishing details in modern watchmaking. Re-polished cases that have lost these details cannot be restored without specialist re-finishing.
Documentation & continuity
A genuine Patek typically arrives with the Certificate of Origin (warranty card), a printed production record, and the original presentation box. The Certificate of Origin number must match the case engraving. For pieces 6+ years old, also confirm the latest service record matches the case serial in Patek's service archives.
Market Outlook
The Patek Philippe secondary market in 2026
Patek Philippe occupies the apex of the secondary watch market in price-per-reference terms. Steel Nautilus references hit speculative peaks in 2022 that have since corrected by approximately 30–45% — but still trade at multiples of their original retail prices. The discontinued 5711/1A-010 has consolidated above $200,000 across most condition grades. Aquanaut 5167A and 5167R have followed similar trajectories. Calatrava and Complications are more stable: they are bought primarily by horological collectors rather than speculators, and trade closer to fair value. Grand Complications — perpetual calendars, minute repeaters — are largely insulated from broader market swings because their buyer pool is small and patient. Long-term, Patek Philippe remains the brand most likely to appreciate in any horological down-cycle because supply is permanently limited and demand is global and growing.

Is a pre-owned Patek Philippe Nautilus a good investment?
The Patek Philippe Nautilus, particularly the 5711 and 5726 references, has shown exceptional appreciation in the secondary market. As a limited-production watch from an independent manufacture, demand consistently outstrips supply. Condition, box, papers, and dial variants all affect value.
What is the difference between the Nautilus and Aquanaut?
The Nautilus (1976) features an octagonal porthole-inspired case and integrated steel bracelet with a refined sports watch aesthetic. The Aquanaut (1997) uses a rounded octagonal case with a composite strap for a sportier, more contemporary feel. Both are produced in small quantities and highly sought-after pre-owned.

What is the Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève)?
The Geneva Seal is a quality certification awarded only to movements assembled and adjusted within the canton of Geneva that meet 12 strict finishing and accuracy criteria. Every modern Patek Philippe movement carries the Patek Philippe Seal — an in-house standard introduced in 2009 that is even more demanding than the Geneva Seal, including +/-3 to -2 seconds per day accuracy on the wrist.
How long do Patek Philippe waitlists typically run?
For popular references like the Aquanaut 5167 or Nautilus 5811, official boutique waitlists can run from 3 years to 'effectively closed' — most boutiques no longer take new entries. Patek's authorised dealers prioritise long-standing collectors. For most buyers, the secondary market is the only practical route to ownership of these references.
Should I service a Patek Philippe at the manufacture or independently?
For grand complications (perpetual calendar, minute repeater, split-seconds), service should always be done at the Patek Philippe manufacture in Geneva or one of their certified service centres. For simpler references (Calatrava, three-hand Nautilus), highly experienced independent watchmakers with Patek parts accounts can perform excellent service at lower cost. Always confirm parts sourcing and warranty before committing.
What is the Tiffany & Co. Patek Philippe Nautilus?
The reference 5711/1A-018 'Tiffany Blue' was a 170-piece collaboration produced exclusively for Tiffany & Co. retail in 2021, featuring a turquoise Tiffany Blue dial with co-signed dial text. It became the most valuable modern Nautilus, with examples reaching auction prices over $6 million. We occasionally locate this reference for clients — it is one of the rarest production Pateks ever made.
